Advanced Energy Is

Advanced energy encompasses all products and services that help make energy secure, clean, and affordable.

Advanced energy is what happens when energy meets 21st Century technologies. As the best available technologies for meeting energy needs today and tomorrow, advanced energy encompasses all products and services that help make energy secure, clean, and affordable.

With global energy consumption projected to rise nearly 40 percent by 2030, future prosperity depends on meeting growing demand with energy that is secure, clean and affordable. In providing those solutions, advanced energy creates value for customers and for the economy. This value contributes to long-term growth for the economy overall, and to growth of advanced energy companies specifically. Just as the Internet economy transformed society in unexpected ways, the advanced energy economy has the potential to create dramatic new opportunities for economic growth in the U.S. and around the world.

In every corner of the country, innovative companies large and small, start-up and established, are transforming the way we make and use energy – and creating a new industry. Though widely varied, advanced energy technologies and services work together to make the best use of multiple resources for meeting energy needs – fast-start natural gas power plants complementing intermittent wind power, smart grid technologies moving power where it’s needed and protecting against outages, efficiency measures reducing waste and stretching all our energy sources further. Advanced energy technologies and products are also providing a host of other benefits, including cost savings, cleaner air, and greater energy security.

A report commissioned by the Advanced Energy Economy Institute and produced by Pike Research, a part of Navigant’s Energy Practice, has analyzed advanced energy markets in the U.S. and worldwide for the first time. The report shows the size, breadth, and scope of the advanced energy industry, and details the economic impact of advanced energy in the United States and around the world.

SEGMENTS

As defined by Advanced Energy Economy, the advanced energy industry consists of seven distinct market segments associated with energy demand (Transportation, Buildings, and Industry) and energy supply (Fuel Production, Fuel Delivery, Electricity Generation, and Electricity Delivery and Management). These segments are further divided into 41 subsegments, each consisting of multiple categories of technologies, products, and services.

These subsegments range from Propulsion Systems, Vehicle Design and Materials, and Freight Logistics in Transportation to Advanced Metering Infrastructure and Energy Storage in Electricity Delivery and Management. Within Transportation Propulsion Systems, for instance, will be found Clean Diesel Vehicles, Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs), Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), Natural Gas Vehicles (NGVs), and Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCVs). In all, hundreds of advanced energy solutions are considered here, and the markets for them quantified wherever possible.
